BENIDORM is taking measures to ensure that everybody enjoys watching Sunday’s Euro 2024 final between England and Spain in local bars without any trouble.

The council will implement extra security focusing on the busy Rincon de Loix area.

Some streets will be closed off, drinks will not be sold in glass containers from 6pm, and the police will use two drones to monitor the city.

The Benidorm Policia Local will deploy 10 patrols reinforced by Policia Nacional personnel.

The city’s Citizen Security councillor, Jesus Carrobles, said the operation is very much ‘preventative’ in nature.

“The aim is to anticipate any behaviour that may happen on roads and public spaces to ensure fans of the two teams can enjoy the match without any incidents,” said Carrobles.

The city is expected to be very busy with thousand of domestic and foreign tourists swelling the population during the peak holiday season.

Many locals and tourists are expected to watch Sunday’s final on big screens on terraces of bars, restaurants, and hotels in the Rincon de Loix.

The operation will begin three hours before the 9pm kick-off with traffic being barred from some streets including a section of Calle Gerona between Avenidas Europa and Derramador.

Parking will also be restricted from Saturday night and any vehicles left will be towed away, as authorities want more room for people to circulate.

In the event that Spain wins, the Policia Local plans to close off traffic on Avenida de l’Aiguera and the Plaza de la Hispanidad, which is the anticipated point of celebration for Spanish fans.

All Rincon de Loix hospitality venues will not be able to serve drinks in streets and Carrobles has called on business owners to cooperate.

Benidorm mayor, Toni Perez, said: “This will be a day of celebration for the two groups of fans, where a playful and festive atmosphere reigns of quiet and good coexistence between Spaniards and the English.”
