Escape the crowds at these ‘secret’ natural pools in Tarifa hidden right in front of ancient Roman ruins

IF you’re looking to escape the crowds this summer, head to Tarifa to discover Cadiz’s best-kept secret: the natural pools at Baelo Claudia.

Bolonia Beach in Tarifa is one of Spain’s most pristine beaches and is frequently included in lists of the country’s most spectacular coastal spots.

But if you travel a little further down the coast, you’ll find something even more picturesque: the natural pools in front of the second century Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia.

The pools form at low tide, when seawater becomes trapped in natural rock formations along the shoreline.

Bolonia beach, a gem of the Costa de la Luz, boasts 4km of pristine shoreline.

They offer warm, calm waters that are perfect for cooling off in the summer.

It’s also the perfect place for a pampering session without the spa price tag, with many bathers covering themselves in the clay found in the pools.

The slate-derived clay acts as a natural, mineral-rich mask for the skin, with a range of anti-ageing and detoxifying benefits.

Located directly in front of the Baelo Claudia Roman ruins, the site allows you to combine a relaxing day out with a touch of history.

Baelo Claudia’s visitor centre allows you to step back in time free of charge.

Baelo Claudia, discovered in 1917, is one of the best-preserved Roman archaeological sites in Spain.

With its ancient amphitheatre, basilica, and aqueduct, it offers a glimpse into what life in Roman Hispania was like thousands of years ago.

Accessible only on foot, the pools are typically quieter than nearby Bolonia Beach.

To reach them, park at the beach car park and walk around 50 minutes east towards Tarifa. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and suitable footwear.
