Benidorm is Europe's first city to launch game on video platform used daily by 150 million players

BENIDORM has become the first European destination and only the third in the world- behind Singapore and Tokyo- to have its own dedicated video game on the Roblox platform.

Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system that allows users to programme and play games created by themselves or other users

The Costa Blanca resort’s game is called ‘Benidorm Fun Town Tycoon’ and is an initiative from the City Council and the Visit Benidorm Tourism Foundation.

It aims to promote the destination among children and to attract future new visitors, as well as expanding family tourism.

Gamers will build a skyscraper that sprouts from a magic seed and grows floor by floor until it becomes a vibrant vertical city.

The game was showcased on Thursday at the BeCiTi hub, located in the El Torrejo Municipal Centre.

It is aimed primarily at ‘Generations Alpha and Z’ on a platform that boasts 150 million daily worldwide users.

Visit Benidorm head, Leire Bilbao, said: “It will connect with a young audience using their own language, transforming tourism promotion into a participatory experience.”

The game challenges players to build the most fun skyscraper, while simultaneously learning about Benidorm’s tourist offerings for families including an emphasis on sustainability.

They are guided by ‘Captain Pedro Z’, who introduces quests, unlocks secrets and shares curiosities of Benidorm as the skyscraper grows.

He act’s as the digital host and representing, in turn, the open, close and proudly Mediterranean spirit that is part of the city’s identity.

A player starts with a basic space and progresses by building and unlocking new elements of the environment: attractions, theme parks, animals, dining areas, shows, water parks, and spaces inspired Benidorm.

The experience includes around 500 construction buttons that progressively reveal the contents of the skyscraper.

It is expressed in two large connected worlds: inside the skyscraper, where the user builds their own vertical ‘tycoon’, and outside, in the city, where they complete missions linked to real places in Benidorm.

By exploring the destination and overcoming daily challenges, the player wins ‘seeds’, the internal currency of the game, which allow them to advance faster in the construction.

Among the real areas that are recognisable in the game are spaces inspired by Mediterranean fauna, local restaurants, aquariums, water attractions, theme parks, and rooftops.

Featured areas include Poniente Beach, Benidorm Island, Serra Gelada, the Old Town, and El Castell.
