THE Costa Blanca is bracing itself for the biggest heatwave of the year so far, with temperatures expected to hit 40C in some inland areas on Tuesday.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued orange and yellow warnings for high temperatures in the south and north of Alicante province.
The latest heatwave is progressing across Spain and will affect the whole of the region.

The heat blast is down to an anticyclonic ridge and a very warm air mass.
High levels of sunshine, coupled with atmospheric stability and light winds will mean that increased temperatures will last for several days.
Thermometers will rise on Monday with Aemet activating a yellow warning on the north and south coast between 12:00 and 19:59.
Maximums of 37C are predicted on the north coast, which will be a degree lower in the south.
Winds could moderate temperatures along some parts of the coast, but they will lose effectiveness in the inland and pre-coastal areas.
Close to the sea, humidity levels will rise, leading to tropical nights.
For Tuesday, the orange alert will be in place on Tuesday between 12.00 and 19.59 on the north and south coats.
In the north, the warning takes in areas like Calpe, Javea, Denia, Teulada, Benissa, Pego, Ondara, Altea and Callosa d’en Sarria.
Inland, it applies to Cocentaina, Muro de Alcoy, Planes, Beniarres and Vall de Gallinera.
Further south, the Tuesday’s orange alert includes Alicante, Elche, Benidorm, Villajoyosa, Torrevieja, Orihuela, Santa Pola, Guardamar del Segura and Pilar de la Horadada.
It also covers inland municipalities including Aspe, Callosa de Segura, San Vicente del Raspeig, Mutxamel, Crevillentr, and Novelda.
Aemet recommends avoiding long exposure to the sun during its warning hours as well as reducing any outdoor physical exercise.
It suggests drinking water regularly and for people to pay special attention to the elderly and children as well as seriously ill residents.
