Dear Olive Press readers,
If you are reading this email, then it means you have so far managed to survive the intense heat and occasional bizarre hail storms and mud rain. Well done.
You also might have noticed that Gibraltar has been in the news this week. So long a minor footnote, the Rock has finally had its time in the spotlight.
After much fevered speculation, the negotiating parties emerged in Brussels on Wednesday to announce that they had reached a deal to incorporate Gibraltar into the Schengen Zone.
A BREAKTHROUGH has been reached in negotiations in Brussels that will see major changes for Gibraltar. The border with Spain will effectively disappear, replaced by a ‘dual Gibraltar-Schengen check’ system…
Much remains to be clarified and many details are still to be hammered out in the hugely complex deal, but the bottom line is that the border checks will be removed and people will be able to pass freely between Spain and Gib.
Meanwhile, Olive Press publisher Jon Clarke brought us exclusive updates on the new search for Madeleine McCann undertaken by Portuguese (and German) cops in the Algarve, with some shocking discoveries made.
As ever, there has been turmoil in Spainโs housing conundrum. The countryโs rental sector is โfacing extinctionโ as owners yank their properties from the market, and is there actually anywhere left in Spain where you can find a bargain?
But beware; the โhousing bubbleโ murmurings are getting stronger amid a raft of new property taxes targeting foreign buyers and tourist flats.
Over on the Costa Blanca, Darren Kirby, the founder of the notorious Continental Wealth Management had his say, denying fraud and implicating other players in the pension scandal that immiserated hundreds of expats.
THE Continental Wealth Management (CWM) scandal has been one of the most sordid to dog Spainโs expat community in recent years. It was a tale that had it all
A pair of young Irish tourists were arrested for allegedly raping a woman in a Mallorca hotel, while a pair of Brits were acquitted of a similar crime in Benidorm โ but only after spending 20 months in jail for the charge.
In the realm of politics, corruption allegations against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez are starting to stick, while the owner of once-high-flying Malaga CF, Sheikh Al-Thani, is looking at 14 years in prison for his disgraceful management of the football club.
And to round things off some good news โ Mijas has set aside millions for upgrades that will see a new sanctuary built for the townโs long-suffering and long-derided donkey taxis.
Enjoy the weekend.
