Three in court after yob attack

THREE Spanish youths have appeared in court after a sickening attack on a British schoolboy left him in a coma.

Alex Hughes, 16, was hit over the head with a bottle for allegedly dancing with local girls on the island of Mallorca.

Alex, from Radyr, Cardiff, is in a stable but critical condition after being assaulted leaving a nightclub in the Port d’Andratz resort.

He had been holidaying with three friends and their parents in the quiet resort.

The teenagers – all aged under 18 – have been put in their parents’ custody at home while the investigating judge decides what to do.

Although implicated in the incident, their potential charges will depend on Alex’s recovery.

The three could be ordered to stand trial at the island’s juvenile court, but a decision may take come time to reach.

Alternatively, the judge could send the trio into custody for a set period at a detention centre.

Alex’s dad Dr Dermot Hughes, 47, a consultant anaesthetist in neurosurgery, and nurse mum Helen, 43, have flown out to be at his bedside.

“All we can do is wait with our fingers crossed and pray he comes out of his coma,” said Dermot.

“Alex is a lover not a fighter. He has a quiet manner but is quick-witted – a lovely boy.”

He was attacked on leaving the club by three youths who were laying in wait for his exit.

Unfortunately for our boys they waited for them to leave, drove up in a car and attacked them,” explained Dermot.

“Alex was trying to escape but was hit on the head with a bottle.

“He began to feel unwell as he walked back to the apartment. He was taken to hospital and underwent an operation.

His grandmother said he remained “critical but stable” in Son Dureta hospital in Palma, Mallorca’s capital.

“We are just praying that he will make it,” she said.

  1. well its quite normal for a foreigner to be attacked by groups of these idiots, they are brought up like girls and act like them im surprised the whole town didnt join in .

  2. Doesn`t surprise me one bit, I think brits should start holidaying elsewhere and deprive the Spanish of the tourist income until they learn that its a benefit to them. Go USA.

  3. Are you kidding me Flep? This attack is despicable but it is also very random, the spanish overall are very nice and friendly, in fact when I holiday in Spain I worry about the drunk and violent brits and Irish not the spaniards…

And USA? much more violent country. In Europe you may get beat up, in the USA they shoot you.

  4. As an Irishman I take exception to the racist comment above, from “HanzP”; and I must say I’m surprised and disappointed that it was not immediately deleted from this message board.

The Irish have suffered discrimination and abuse over many years, largely as a result of being stereotyped as “drunk and violent”.

These days, thankfully, it is a slur that most people view as offensive and completely unacceptable.

  5. I live in spain and it really isnt a bad place, the people are friendly depending on where you are, there are some twats out there that going round thinking they own the island but dont let this story affect your viewing on coming here for a holiday.
