In a video, shared by the Jupol police union, seven officers can be seen surrounding the man, who is stood in a fountain waving the large knife.
The incident tool place in the San Cristobal de Los Angeles neighbourhood of Madrid after the man reacted violently to a drug stop.
One police officer was able to bring the tense stand off to an end by sneaking up on the armed man while his colleagues distracted him.
The officer then jumped on top of the man and wrestled him to the ground before placing him under arrest.
