Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain

From The Digital Editor

Ben Pawlowski

Dear Olive Press readers,

It’s a slightly soggy and windswept Ben here, stepping in for Walt for your weekly rundown of the highlights from Olive Press towers.

As I am sure you are aware, the weather has been (yet again) our leading focus this week as Storm Claudia swept in, bringing along bucketloads of rain, high gusts and even a rare red weather warning late on Thursday. Claudia’s caused her fair share of travel chaos and flooding so far – and even sadly claimed the lives of two people in neighbouring Portugal. More bad weather is forecast for the weekend.

Claudia hasn’t been the only culprit. At the start of the week, three people were killed and fifteen others injured as tidal surges battered Tenerife. Here’s a video of one of the powerful waves that swept a group of unsuspecting tourists into the Atlantic.

VIDEO footage shared on social media shows the horrifying moment a crowd of tourists were swept into the Atlantic Ocean after a tidal surge struck the island of Tenerife –…

Back on terra firma, we’ve had – as usual – our fair share of crime stories, varying from the intriguing to the remarkable to the downright wicked. Whether the narcos caught in the act unloading €7.8 million of hashish on the Costa Blanca, the ‘love hug’ robbers nicked in Barcelona after robbing scores of elderly people near Valencia, or the parents arrested in northern Spain after selling their 14-year-old daughter for the hefty price of €5,000 and five bottles of whisky. Or the case of the Bishop of Cadiz, who has stepped back from official duties amid a Vatican investigation into allegations of historical child sex abuse.

POLICE in northern Spain have made five arrests over the alleged sale of a 14-year-old girl for €5,000 and several bottles of whisky. Officers from the Guardia Civil and the…

On the property front, we’ve had an array of stories impacting expats – such as our exclusive report on the alarming case of an Alicante community terrorised by feral squatters.

Elsewhere, the number of properties bought by foreign buyers has surged in 2025, but that could change if Vox get into power. The far-right party have floated the idea of hiking taxes on non-Spaniards who buy homes, an idea which has sparked quite the reaction – as you can imagine – amongst our readers.

In Valencia, Vox will have an important role in deciding who replaces the disgraced Carlos Mazon, who resigned as the region’s president at the start of the month. Mazon’s Partido Popular (PP) have named Juan Francisco Perez Llorca (supposedly a safe pair of hands) as the party’s candidate for the role.

CARLOS Mazon’s Monday morning resignation came as no surprise, with the Valencian president looking a ‘spent’ figure following last Wednesday’s state memorial service in Valencia. He promised an announcement this…

There’s also been plenty of news from some other familiar faces. Elon Musk? His social media platform has been whacked with a €5 million fine – here’s why. King Felipe? On a state visit in China as Madrid continues to cozy up to Beijing. Rosalia? The Catalan singer’s new album has sent Spain – and even its prime minister – into a wild frenzy.

And remember Luis Rubiales, Spain’s least favourite footballing son? He was pelted with eggs at a book launch in the capital…by his uncle.

LUIS Rubiales, the disgraced former chief of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was pelted with eggs at a book launch event in Madrid on Thursday night – by his own…

A final note to end on. Sadly this week we lost Angelina Torres, Spain’s oldest person aged 112. She lived a quite extraordinary life and was the last person ever born in Spain before the First World War. RIP.

ANGELINA Torres, the oldest person in Spain, has died in Barcelona aged 112. The supercentenarian became Spain’s oldest lady fourteen months ago following the deaths of fellow Catalan Maria Branyas,…

Have a great weekend all,

Best,
Ben.
