Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain

From The Digital Editor
Laurence Dollimore

Dear Olive Press readers,

Before we get into this weekโ€™s news, many of you have been in touch following our exclusive report on the collapse of Iberian Funeral Planners in Spain, which has left hundreds of end-of-life plans at risk.

Please continue to tell us your experiences as our investigation remains ongoing. Our report also has the details of other providers helping the affected.ย

Now, unless youโ€™ve been living under a rock, you will have noticed itโ€™s been yet another week of miserable weather in Spain.

Locals in Marbella joked that it looked like โ€˜the end of the worldโ€™ as the skies turned grey and strong gales blew down palm trees.

One house was pictured completely destroyed after the top half collapsed into the street in the heart of the cityโ€™s Old Town.

Meanwhile, the essential Ronda road has been blocked by a major landslide and will be closed for months, severely impacting trade and commuter routes.

In Cadiz, 200 people had to be evacuated as a river overflowed its banks amid the deluge brought on by Storm Konrad.

In the world of politics, Donald Trump sparked more fears among Spanish growers after threatening 200% tariffs on wine and spirit imports from the EU.

It came after Spainโ€™sย PM Pedro Sanchez told the Blocโ€™s leaders that โ€˜it is timeโ€™ they โ€˜assume responsibilityโ€™ for their own defence and security, suggesting a pivot from the US.ย

In travel news, rail workers across Spain have announced strikes, threatening travel misery for millions, hereโ€™s what you should know.

Meanwhile, the controversial new โ€˜big brother lawโ€™ for tourists is โ€˜driving hotels madโ€™ because the technology โ€˜does not workโ€™, according to industry leaders.

And Brits and other tourists were warned these destinations could increase holiday charges by up to 200% –ย hereโ€™s what we know.

Thatโ€™s all from me this week, have a good weekend.
Laurence
