Members of the force’s cybercrime division in the Murcia region launched a probe after spotting an online advert for a Ferrari on a second-hand vehicle portal.
Their interest in a possible offence revolved around the low price- well below the market value for such a car.
A Policia Nacional spokesperson said that the model would attract an asking price of between €70,000 and €120,000, depending on its age and condition.
The owner, however, was only wanting a sum below €30,000.
Officers went to see the seller after identifying his IP address via the online ad, and spotted him driving the car in El Altet.
They discovered that it was a Ferrari replica built on another vehicle chassis, courtesy of a workshop in Alicante.
The Policia Nacional said the designs, aesthetic lines and logos corresponding to the Ferrari 360 Spider model had all been used illegally.
The car was impounded and its owner arrested.
He was subsequently bailed ahead of a court appearance.
