Dear Olive Press readers,
For those of you living in Spain, you may have noticed that we are currently living through one of the wettest Marches on record.
There have been four named storms in just 12 days, with two of them striking this week alone; Laurence (yes, I was inundated with messages) and Martinho.
Tragically, at least three people were killed by Storm Laurence in Andalucia, while others are still missing.
Hundreds of peopleย were evacuated across Malaga, Marbella, Sevilla and elsewhere due to flooding.ย
Oneย viral video from Cordoba showed a heroic woman jumping into a stream to rescue a drowning cat.ย
In Madrid, authorities were forced to open a damย temporarily to relieve pressure, just as Storm Martinho was rolling in.ย
The wet weather will not last forever, thankfully, as forecasters predictedย April will be โwarmer than usualโ this year.
In other news, there are two missing persons cases that have taken on urgency among the expat community in Andalucia this week.
A German carer named Martina has not been seen since popping out to do some errands with her pet dog Ellie in the Marbella area on Friday, March 14.ย Finding her blue, German-plated car is now vital to the investigation.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old girl, believed to be Irish or British, has been missing from Almeria since Tuesday this week.ย More details here.
In property, the squatter crisis was laid bare by new statistics which showed more than 20,000 homes nationwide are occupied by so-called โokupasโ.
And foreign buyers have proven essential to the Alicante market, accounting for half of sales last year.
Finally, in the world of travel, anti-tourism rhetoric is building on Mallorca ahead of the high season, with someย locals telling would-be holidaymakers โdo not comeโ.
In Ibiza, fed-up locals have used boulders to block access to a protected beauty spot while erecting โno entryโ signs to ward off โpolluting touristsโ.
Thatโs all from me this week, have a great weekend.
Laurence
