Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain

From The Digital Editor
Walter Finch

Dear Olive Press readers,

Here’s the latest round-up of what’s been going on in Spain this week, starting with a gas explosion at a popular tourist bar in the Mar Menor area of Murcia on Thursday.

One British tourist from Huddersfield who was present told us ‘it was like a bomb had gone off, glass and metal flying in slow motion around me as I was thrown forward – then screams everywhere.’

Meanwhile, tourists in Mallorca beware: police are now handing out fines to anyone who buys items from street hawkers, as one unlucky punter found out.

PALMA’S Policia Local have slapped a fine on a person who bought a pair of sunglasses from an illegal street seller. It’s their first sanction against people purchasing goods from…

Over in Ibiza, onlookers were shocked – but not that shocked – to see controversial Irish fighter Conor McGregor crack a guy with two left hooks on the dancefloor around 6am.

Despite video footage of the moment, it seems that the police have not looked to make any arrests.

Coming down to Andalucia, and the annual Black Flags report has named and shamed both Tarifa beach and the entire Malaga coastline for pollution and mismanagement.

Valencia also gets namechecked for having a beach still covered in flood disaster waste – stretching back since last October.

A stir was caused by a survey that revealed Andalucia’s most sexually active province – we asked if you lived in it and how you stacked up.

In Madrid, a policeman was arrested for restraining a phone thief in a chokehold that eventually killed him, raising yet more outcry within Spain’s polarised society.

A nationwide medical strike was held by doctors and medics last week to highlight their various complaints – it put a halt to all non-emergency medical operations, among other things.

If you’re struggling with the scorching days now that summer is in full swing, some good news is that the Spanish government has launched an English-language version of its heat alert website.

On the international scale, Spain’s key role in US military logistics was again made clear when a large number of mid-air refuelling tankers stopped over at Moron air base near Sevilla as tensions with Iran have reached fever pitch.

Meanwhile, Pedro Sanchez has formally denied NATO’s (i.e. Donald Trump’s) demands to commit to spending 5% of GDP on defence, claiming it’s incompatible with maintaining the country’s social services.

Speaking of Sanchez, can he even survive as prime minister? Read our explainer on the many corruption scandals engulfing him.

That’s all for this week but there’s so much more if you go and check out the website.
