Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain

From The Digital Editor
Laurence Dollimore

Dear Olive Press readers,

The missing persons investigation into the disappearance of US cyclist Matt Opperman came to a tragic end this week after his body was discovered next to a tree near Siles, Jaen.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the Opperman family at this difficult time.

In other news, the Luis Rubiales trial finally came to an end. A judge ordered the ex-Spanish FIFA boss to pay some €10,000 in fines for his ‘non-consensual’ kiss against World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso.

Our exclusive story about a Spanish mayor demanding Meghan Markle change her lifestyle brand’s logo amid ‘plagiarism’ claims also grabbed headlines around the world.

As did the story of a British expat living on the Costa del Sol, who sparked quite the debate after telling UK dwellers to ‘get out while you can’, comparing Britain to the ‘third world’.

Meanwhile, locals in Benalmadena are rejoicing after it was revealed that the Tivoli World theme park will reopen its doors after a five-year hiatus.

In Alicante, the killer of Irishman Carl Carr received just six years in prison, after beating his pal to death with a knuckle duster and dumping his body near the motorway.

It comes as the family of murdered Belfast dad John George announced they were flying out to the Costa Blanca to hunt down his killers.

In the world of property, we spoke to Marbella expert Chris Clover about some of the drastic measures being proposed by Pedro Sanchez’s government that would severely impact British and US buyers – including an additional 100% tax.

Plus, the little-known gem in northern Spain where Richard Gere and his Spanish wife have been house hunting.

That’s all from me this week, have a great weekend.
Laurence
