Dear Olive Press readers,
I’m sorry to report that this will be my last newsletter as I leave the Olive Press this week to pursue a freelance career as a roving reporter in Spain.
You will remain in good hands, however, as my esteemed colleague Walter will take over the reins until a permanent replacement is found.
The Olive Press website has seen great growth over the past 18 months and I am confident that this will continue in 2025.
Back to the news, the weather took centre stage once again this week as a freak hail storm turned Alhaurin el Grande (Malaga) into a ‘winter wonderland’, with footage showing streets turned into icy rapids.
Meanwhile, the hills behind the Costa del Sol were blanketed by snow following a cold snap brought on by Storm Martinho – the fourth Atlantic storm in 12 days.
Just days later, and in true Spanish spring fashion,ย today is expected to be a scorcher along the very same coastline, with highs of 27C forecast.
The jury is out for April, however, with meteorologists predicting the rain will return (the term April showers exists for a reason).
In travel news, Irish holidaymakers were warned of ‘danger zones’ by their government’s foreign department, citing a rise in pickpockets.
It came afterย the Olive Press revealed how a Costa del Sol robbery gang is continuing to terrorise Sabinillas and La Duquesa, with a British pub becoming the latest victim.ย
In Tenerife, 200 squatters took over a hotel before selling the furniture online, exposing the weakness of Spain’s legal system when it comes to fighting so-called ‘okupas’.
In good news, German carer Martina was finally found more than a week after disappearing from the Marbella area. She was ‘alive and well’ in Huelva, in the far-west of Andalucia.
In the north of the country, Superman starย Henry Cavill was spotted shopping for cows before taking in the sights of Asturias and Galicia.ย
It was bad news for Novak Djokovic, however, after a Malaga court fined him โฌ10,000 for illegally renovating his Marbella villa – although something tells me he can afford the slap on the wrist.
Meanwhile, Manchester United owner Jim Ratcliffe’s โฌ150m yacht was seen docking in Mallorca.
It came as anti-tourism sentiment on the holiday island began bubbling once more, asย activists warned locals would soon be ‘expelled’ from the Balearics due to surging house prices ’caused by mass tourism’.ย
EXCLUSIVE: Don’t miss our report on the new threat to orcas in the Gibraltar Strait – yachties who ‘will kill whales with a tear in their eyes’ if they continue to attack vessels.
Plus, whyย this wine capital offers a perfect alternative to the crowded Barcelona, according to The Mirror.ย
That’s all from me this week, have a great weekend.
Laurence
