Olive Press Round-Up: The biggest stories in Spain

From The Digital Editor
Laurence Dollimore

Dear Olive Press readers,

We have been inundated with messages of support for Kenneth Jobe, a British expat in his 80s whose Mijas home has been taken over by British squatters, as reported in our exclusive story this week.

We are following the story closely and will have an update in the coming days, but plans are in motion.

It’s been a wet and windy week across Spain, with heavy rainfall and flooding affecting large parts of the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca.

Cadiz was also battered by the onslaught, with the famous Jerez racing circuit filmed partly submerged.

And in the Canary Islands, a car was filmed being dragged out to sea in Telde, while one woman was almost swept away inside her vehicle before being rescued by a local.

After more than a week of rain, Storm Jana was forecast to arrive yesterday, ushering in yet another miserable weekend – although let’s be honest, the reservoirs need it.

As Donald Trump continued to threaten EU tariffs this week, we looked at the Spanish industries most at risk – and it’s bad news for the southern region of Andalucia.

Meanwhile, a poll among Spaniards showed an overwhelming majority are most certainly not a fan of the US president.

For those looking to escape to Spain, one financial firm claimed it is a ‘tax trap’ for wealthy expats, branding the country ‘worse than a mafia don’.

But tell that to this Irish expat, who says his mental health is ‘far better’ after making the move, despite being on a ‘much lower’ salary.

In other travel news, any EU citizen visiting the UK must now sign up to the ETA register, here’s what you need to know.

Finally, two missing persons cases remain active on the Costa del Sol; Grant Barr, a New York banker who disappeared from Estepona in late January, and homeless Brit John Bruce Vardy, who has not been located since being taken to a hospital in Malaga three weeks ago. Any help would be appreciated.

That’s it from me, have a great weekend.
Laurence
